Myths about giving blood
Some things get said a lot and are wrong. Here are the answers, with published numbers.
"Morocco has enough blood"
False. Morocco needs more than 1,000 donations a day. The national stock covered 5 days in June 2022, Casablanca and Rabat 2 days, against a target of 7.
"Donors get paid"
False. Law 03-94 says giving is voluntary, free and brings no remuneration of any kind.
"Blood is for the patient's family to give"
False. In 2019, 93% of donations were voluntary and 7% were replacement donations by family. WHO wants replacement giving phased out.
"Negative groups are never short"
False. O-, AB- and B- are often short, and Rh-negative is about 20% of need.
"No giving during Ramadan"
False. Night drives run in mosques after Isha during Ramadan.
"The app tells me if I can give"
False. The doctor at the centre decides, after a check before every donation.
"Match days make no difference"
False. On Morocco's 2022 World Cup match days, centres recorded "0 donors".
The doctor at the centre decides whether you can give. This page sums up the press and the law; it is not medical advice.
